Hali'a asthma

  • We dropped Nanea off at the DeCaires' house and then checked into the hospital at around 8pm. Found out her asthma is pretty bad and she has bronchiolitis and a virus called rsv, and found another infection growing in her chest...pneumonia. There's no real treatment for it other than suction and draining. She had 2 asthma treatments, catheter for urine sample, suction from her nose three times, blood draw after three attempts to getting the iv in, chest x-rays and still waiting . Poor thing she has been such a trooper. All she wanted was water, but couldn't get it til 11pm after lots of the tests were done. Daddy did good while mommy cried as they poked and prodded into her arm and wrist. The nurses were literally fishing around for her veins which really ticked me off. I mean, don't they do this EVERY day? They should be good at it, right? Well, Jason took a nap with Hali'a while we waited for the lab results to come in. Luckily everything seemed to be okay and since she seemed to improve, we were able to go home at 1am.

  • For future references:
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) can cause a serious illness in certain infants and children. It is a very common virus, which usually causes mild cold-like symptoms in infants and children. RSV is spread very easily by touching, kissing and shaking hands with an infected person. It can spread through the air by sneezing or coughing, and can live on countertops and used tissues for several hours. It can spread very rapidly in crowded households and in day care centers. RSV disease: what to look for-rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, gasping for breath, wheezing, and coughing. RSV occurs in seasonal outbreaks, usually from fall to spring
  • To help prevent RSV infection: Make certain anyone about to touch your baby washes their hands with soap and warm water first, Avoid contact with the baby if you have a cold or fever, Avoid taking your baby to crowded locations, such as shopping malls.
  • Bronchiolitis: is a lung infection that causes coughing, wheezing, fever, difficulty breathing, fussiness, and difficulty feeding in babies only. It is similar to asthma because the wheezing sounds very similar.  It is very common.  It is usually caused by the RSV germ and can spread to others and causes cold symptoms in older children and adults.  No smoking in the house if baby has any breathing problems.  It is caused by a virus to antibiotics don't help.  Babies are worse in the first 2 to 3 days, then they get better slowly over 1 to 3 weeks.  Babies can worsen quickly so watch them closely and return to the emergency department if they get worse: baby is having more difficulty breathing, you hear grunting noises with baby's breathing, you see retractions when breathing (skin between or under ribs is sucked in), you see nasal flaring with breathing, baby is not drinking well and is making less urine, color is pale or blue/gray in the lips or figernails-call 911, baby appears to stop breathing-call 911
  • Home Care:
    • Sleep baby more upright. Use a car seat or stroller for this.
    • Use saline nose drops to clear excess mucous, especially before trying to feed your child.
    • Use a cool mist vaporizer if the air is dry
    • Fever measures.
